After a career filled with individual accolades and a lack of team success, Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane’s chance to secure his first title could arrive as soon as the final whistle on Saturday during their home game against Mainz.
If Bayern manages to overcome sixth-placed Mainz and second-placed Bayer Leverkusen falters against Augsburg, Kane and Bayern will be crowned champions of the Bundesliga.
With an eight-point lead and only four matches left in the season, Kane’s inaugural title seems all but guaranteed.
However, following six final defeats – three with Tottenham, two with the English national team, and one with Bayern – a first title win would serve as a long-awaited achievement for the 31-year-old forward.
Having spent two decades at his formative club, Tottenham, Kane made the switch to Bayern in 2023, driven by his ambition for collective trophies.
While hopes of claiming the Champions League at their home ground were dashed with a quarter-final exit to Inter Milan, lifting the Bundesliga trophy would help mitigate the disappointment of a trophyless 2023/24 season.
Kane has largely refrained from discussing the title chase, choosing instead to concentrate on the immediate challenges, but he did express in February just how much the pursuit of team honours motivated him.
“There are many people who, throughout my career, only talk about the fact I haven’t won a title yet. It would be nice to silence a few of them,” Kane remarked.
Should he claim the title, Kane would join the ranks of Kevin Keegan and Owen Hargreaves as Englishmen who have won the Bundesliga.
In an interview with Sky Germany on Wednesday, Bayern heavyweight Uli Hoeness – instrumental in the €100 million (£86.4 million) decision to bring Kane to Bavaria – stated that “nobody deserves the title more” than the England captain.
Hoeness described Kane as “a true Bayern player”, showering him with accolades and stating, “he fights, he works, he scores an incredible number of goals, but he also puts in the hard work for the team.
“You can sense his absolute desire to win this title.”
