On Friday, Pep Guardiola refuted claims that Manchester City made significant signings in January to prepare for a potential transfer ban due to alleged breaches of Premier League financial regulations.
The club invested approximately £170 million ($211 million) on new players, including Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis, and Nico Gonzalez, ahead of the Monday transfer deadline.
These additions are essential for a team struggling in the Premier League and only narrowly qualified for the Champions League play-offs.
As City gears up to face Leyton Orient from the third tier in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday, Guardiola was questioned about whether the club’s substantial spending was influenced by the chance of a transfer embargo.
He indicated that he anticipates the verdict from the hearing regarding 115 alleged financial breaches of Premier League rules will be announced in the coming weeks.
If found guilty, City could face several penalties, including a transfer ban, fines, point deductions, or even relegation. The club maintains that it has done nothing wrong.
Guardiola believes that his club is unfairly portrayed due to their owners’ wealth, emphasising that their expenditure does not come close to that of their competitors.
“Over the last five years, we have had the lowest net spend among the top six clubs,” he stated. “Even with the financial outlay this transfer window, we still fall short of what Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham, and even Liverpool have spent.”
“The truth is that we have sold numerous players over recent seasons, but I am aware that the perception of this club always revolves around just finances.”
“I respect other clubs, but in a month, we should have a conclusion and a ruling, and then I will share my thoughts on what has transpired. Ultimately, each club is free to operate as they see fit.”
