Paris Saint-Germain secured their spot in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals after a tense penalty shootout victory against Liverpool, prevailing 4-1 at Anfield. This marks PSG’s inaugural triumph in a European shootout.
Following a controversial first leg in Paris, where they edged the tie with a narrow 1-0 lead, Arne Slot’s team entered this second match with hopes of overcoming their opponents.
The Reds came out firing, displaying more aggression in the first 10 minutes than they did throughout the entirety of the previous meeting. Nuno Mendes had to produce a fantastic block to deny Mohamed Salah’s shot, while the Egyptian forward later skewed another effort wide after a dazzling run.
Yet, despite Liverpool’s early dominance, it was PSG who struck back decisively as Ousmane Dembélé equalised the aggregate score, capitalising on a defensive mishap from Ibrahima Konaté.
Dembélé linked up effectively with Bradley Barcola and was fortunate when his partner’s pass inadvertently came back to him, allowing him to slot the ball home.
Konaté attempted to atone for his earlier mistake, unleashing a long-range shot that was safely parried away by Gianluigi Donnarumma. However, Liverpool’s defensive lapses continued to be evident, as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia saw his curling shot deflect off Ryan Gravenberch and narrowly clear the crossbar after being set up by Dembélé.
Emerging from the half-time break, Slot’s men displayed renewed energy. Dominik Szoboszlai had a goal disallowed for offside prior to Donnarumma making a remarkable one-handed save to deny Luis Diaz’s header from an Alexis Mac Allister corner.
Mac Allister’s set pieces were causing significant trouble, with another corner resulting in Salah having a close-range chance that Kvaratskhelia brilliantly cleared off the line.
The home side kept up the pressure, with Jarell Quansah’s diving header from Andrew Robertson’s free-kick rattling the woodwork—though the effort would have been called back for offside.
PSG struggled to gain a rhythm after the break, but Kvaratskhelia gave Liverpool a reminder of his skill with a speculative shot that sailed over the bar, leading to an exhausting extra time period.
The French champions came close to doubling their score shortly after, with Lucas Beraldo heading just wide from Kvaratskhelia’s cross, and Desire Doue also missing a promising chance.
As the match headed for penalties, Liverpool fans may have felt confident, given their club’s strong shootout history in UEFA competitions. Conversely, PSG came into the session having lost their previous only shootout to Rangers in the 2001/02 UEFA Cup.
However, PSG gained the upper hand after Donnarumma thwarted Darwin Núñez, and after Curtis Jones also missed his effort, Doue secured the win, sending PSG into the quarter-finals, where they will meet either Club Brugge or Aston Villa.
