The Danish women’s national team faced a crushing 3-0 defeat at home on Tuesday night, succumbing to Italy in the Nations League.
This loss was particularly disappointing for Denmark, as it could have been an even heavier scoreline, given their lacklustre performance.
In their initial encounter in the group stages, Denmark had claimed victory with a scoreline of 3-1, but in this match, they appeared to underestimate their opponents, allowing Italy to dominate proceedings.
The warning signs for the Danes were evident early on; in the fifth minute, Sofia Cantore rattled the post, exposing a disoriented and passive Danish defence.
Denmark managed to create their clearest opportunity just before half-time when Italian goalkeeper Laura Giuliani exhibited excellent reflexes to deny a dangerous delivery from Emma Snerle.
The second half saw Italy gradually take control and they broke the deadlock after an hour. Arianna Caruso combined with Manuela Giugliano just outside the box before coolly slotting the ball past Stine Balisager, much to the dismay of the Herning crowd.
The situation worsened for Denmark in the 78th minute when Amalie Vangsgaard and her teammate Jóhanna Fossdalsá failed to communicate effectively during a defensive scramble. Lucia Di Guglielmo seized the opportunity to volley home, extending the visitors’ lead to two goals.
Cristiana Girelli sealed the deal for Italy with just four minutes remaining, finishing off a pinpoint delivery to make it 3-0.
As a result of this match, Denmark and Italy swap positions within the Nations League standings, with Denmark now sitting in third place while Italy climbs to second.
Denmark’s upcoming fixtures include matches against Wales and Sweden, scheduled for 30 May and 3 June respectively.
