“Make sure you keep track of your laps at Plumpton.”
This was the advice from the race caller after jockey Callum Pritchard made the blunder of pulling up his horse a lap early during a meeting at Plumpton, an English country racing track.
Pritchard was riding the race favourite, Sweet Nightingale, in a three-mile jumps event and held a commanding lead of seven lengths when he mistakenly believed he had secured the victory.
After glancing over his shoulder and seeing no competitors in sight, he eased off the horse, casually passing the finishing line.
The catch? There was still a full lap left to run.
“I hope he hasn’t miscalculated his laps… there’s still a lap to go,” the commentator remarked.

As Pritchard realised his error, the other three horses in the race sped past Sweet Nightingale, prompting him to hastily urge his mount back to full speed.
However, he could only manage to secure a third-place finish in the four-horse race.
Following the incident, the British Horseracing Authority imposed a 12-day suspension on Pritchard.
“Callum Pritchard, the rider of Sweet Nightingale, who finished third, appeared to misjudge the race’s distance,” a statement revealed.
“Having established a comfortable lead as he neared the line, he eased off too early, only resuming competitive running after crossing the winning line with a full circuit still to go.”
“After an interview and reviewing the recordings of the event, the rider was handed a 12-day suspension.”
The 25-year-old Pritchard was leading the jockey’s championship, but his mistake has seen him drop to third place. He will need to work hard to reclaim his position once his ban is lifted.
