AC Oulu’s strong start to the Veikkausliiga season has hit a significant bump as they fell to newly-promoted Lahti, slipping to third place behind Inter Turku, who remain unbeaten following a narrow victory over Mariehamn.
Lahti 2-1 AC Oulu
Following three straight victories, AC Oulu’s 3-2 defeat to KuPS in midweek did little to undermine their solid season opening. However, this latest loss has raised concerns, as Lahti secured their first points since the season opener.
Lahti wasted no time taking charge, grabbing the lead within five minutes. A well-placed cross into the six-yard box was only headed away briefly by a defender, allowing Martim Augusto to unleash a powerful right-foot volley from 12 yards that found the back of the net.
Oulu had several chances to level the match, including a goal that was controversially disallowed for offside just before half-time when Julius Korkko’s strike appeared to find the net. Matters worsened for the visitors three minutes later, as Neemias headed in Romain Sans’ corner.
Oulu finally got on the scoresheet midway through the second half, showcasing well-coordinated build-up play that saw Rasmus Karjalainen set up Korkko at the edge of the box, where Korkko’s brilliant 20-yard shot found the net without any controversy this time.
Ultimately, that was not enough for Oulu, who have now suffered back-to-back defeats, while Lahti celebrated their long-awaited points, sitting sixth in the standings with six points.
Inter Turku 1-0 Mariehamn
Inter Turku claimed their third consecutive win, now trailing leaders KuPS only on goal difference following a tight encounter against Mariehamn, who are still searching for their first victory of the season and occupy 10th place after drawing their home matches and losing away.
The trip to Turku proved challenging for Mariehamn in the first half, as the home side registered 10 shots compared to their one attempt. However, FC Inter was unable to convert their dominance into goals, and the first half ended without any score.
It seemed like a frustrating afternoon for the home side, until 12 minutes from time when Jussi Niska’s lofted cross to the back post was deftly nodded down by Alie Conteh, whose header just squeezed through the gap between the goalkeeper and the near post, clinching the win for Turku.
