Former Tottenham Hotspur player Edgar Davids expressed to AFP on Tuesday that the struggling London club may face a tough challenge in avoiding relegation, criticising “a lack of quality and management.”
Tottenham find themselves under their third manager this season amidst a crisis, currently seated in the Premier League relegation zone, two points behind safety with only five matches remaining.
Davids, a former Dutch international midfielder, acknowledged that the recent hiring of Italian coach Roberto De Zerbi was a positive development, yet he remains concerned about Spurs’ future in the top flight.
When asked by AFP how Tottenham fell into this situation, Davids remarked: “It’s quite clear; if you invest poorly, you reap the consequences…”
“There’s a distinct lack of quality and management—it’s everything.”
Having played for Spurs during the 2005/06 season after a distinguished career with clubs like Ajax, AC Milan, Juventus, Barcelona, and Inter Milan, Davids pointed out that Spurs needed to bolster their injury-depleted squad during the winter transfer window.
“I truly hope they avoid relegation; bringing in De Zerbi was a very promising step,” said the 53-year-old, speaking at the launch of the ‘Hong Kong Football Festival,’ which will feature Manchester City, Chelsea, Inter Milan, and Juventus this August.
“However, it’s going to be challenging. They should have made significant moves in the winter window to bolster the squad. It was clearly necessary.”
Tottenham, who have not tasted victory in the league since late December, are set to face already relegated Wolves this Saturday.
