Chelsea’s manager, Liam Rosenior, stated on Monday that he retains the full backing of the club’s owners, despite accepting responsibility for a concerning streak of four consecutive defeats in the Premier League.
A narrow 1-0 defeat at home to Manchester United on Saturday has left Chelsea positioned sixth in the league table, accumulating 48 points with five matches still to play. As several teams trail closely behind, their chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League have taken a significant hit.
The Blues’ woes have been exacerbated by their inability to find the back of the net, having gone without a goal in their last four league matches, equalling their longest such drought since 1912.
Next, Chelsea will face Brighton & Hove Albion, currently ninth, away on Tuesday.
When questioned about whether he believes the owners still have faith in his leadership, Rosenior was clear in his response.
“100%,” he affirmed to reporters. “They’ve been incredibly supportive, and our daily discussions have reflected that.”
“We recognise the need to secure victories now, yet this does not overshadow our ambition for long-term success and consistency.”
Rosenior was appointed as Chelsea’s head coach this January, with a contract extending until 2032, following the exit of Italian Enzo Maresca on New Year’s Day.
The 41-year-old Englishman is the fourth permanent manager to be appointed by the club since Todd Boehly’s takeover in 2022.
“We must win,” Rosenior stated, adding, “That is the expectation of this club, and rightly so. It’s about winning; that’s the essence of football.”
“You can’t discuss long-term plans without addressing short-term performance. To be candid, we haven’t been performing well in recent matches, and I take full responsibility for that as the head coach.”
On the injury update, Estevao will not feature in the match against Brighton, while fellow forward Joao Pedro will be a late fitness test.
“Joao has been training on the pitch today. We’ll make a decision on him tomorrow morning,” Rosenior confirmed. “Estevao is definitely out for tomorrow, and we are conducting additional tests on him.”
