Real Sociedad celebrated their first Copa del Rey triumph since the 2019/20 season, emerging victorious 4-3 in a penalty shootout against Atlético Madrid after a thrilling 2-2 draw in regulation and extra time at the Estadio La Cartuja.
The final started with a bang when Ander Barrenetxea expertly directed a header past a sluggish Juan Musso just 14 seconds in, before Atlético had even touched the ball.
This marked the fourth time in six matches for the Rojiblancos that an opponent found the net before the 20-minute mark in this season’s Copa del Rey.
After regaining their composure, Atlético’s Unai Marrero managed to keep out a fierce free-kick from Julián Alvarez just minutes later, as Diego Simeone’s squad tried to recover from the early shock.
Marcos Llorente and Antoine Griezmann took command of the game’s rhythm, and their efforts eventually bore fruit when Ademola Lookman manoeuvered into space within the box.
Despite being tightly guarded by three defenders from Sociedad, Lookman shrewdly placed a low shot into the bottom corner of Marrero’s goal.

Both teams exchanged attacks in an exhilarating match, with Gonçalo Guedes going close for La Real, shooting just wide.
As the first half progressed, the match became increasingly physical, with neither side creating any clear chances until Musso collided with Guedes in mid-air.
This granted Mikel Oyarzabal the opportunity to send the keeper the wrong way, reclaiming Sociedad’s lead just before the break.

Following halftime, both teams returned with fresh determination, with Atlético eager to get Lookman more involved.
The early momentum favoured Los Colchoneros, but they struggled to create any genuine threats as the match approached the hour mark.
Despite impressive link-up play between Alvarez and Griezmann, Diego Simeone opted to substitute the Frenchman in a bid to inject fresh energy into his attack with 20 minutes to go.
Sociedad’s attempts to advance through Guedes and Carlos Soler only resulted in mounting pressure on their defence, as Atlético quickly regained possession and pushed hard for the second equaliser.

As the match approached its conclusion, Real Sociedad pressed forward only to be caught by surprise when Alvarez smartly drifted into space and unleashed a stunning left-footed strike.
Álex Baena subsequently squandered a glorious opportunity, missing an open goal from just four yards out as Atlético sought a late winner.
With players tiring, gaps began to appear in extra time, and Alvarez came close when he struck the crossbar during the first period.
The final quarter-hour expectedly featured a disordered play, necessitating a penalty shootout to decide the champions.
Both Alexander Sørloth and Alvarez had their penalties saved by Marrero, leaving Atlético in a precarious position as Pablo Marín netted the decisive kick for Sociedad.
Although Atlético had been unbeaten in their last nine head-to-head encounters (W6, D3), Sociedad has now triumphed in four of their last five clashes in this competition, thus preserving their cup advantage over the Rojiblancos.
The loss marked Atlético’s sixth defeat in their last seven matches across all competitions, offering encouragement to their upcoming UEFA Champions League semi-final opponents, Arsenal.
