Tottenham Hotspur’s fight for survival in the Premier League (PL) took a significant hit as Georginio Rutter scored a last-gasp equaliser in the 95th minute, resulting in a 2-2 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion. The outcome leaves Spurs without a victory in their last 15 top-flight matches.
In a critical stage of their campaign to avoid their first relegation since the 1976/77 season, the home side needed to make a strong start against Brighton to rally the supporters.
However, a lacklustre opening that failed to ignite excitement in the final third hampered their efforts. The match came to life soon after, revealing vulnerabilities in the Tottenham side.

A deep free-kick at the far post was kept alive by Jack Hinshelwood, whose header across goal was nearly turned into an own goal by Micky van de Ven as the Tottenham fans held their breath, watching the ball roll perilously close to the line.
This moment proved pivotal for Spurs, who managed to take the lead just before half-time.
An inventive flick from Xavi Simons saw him chip the ball over Brighton’s defence, and Pedro Porro darted in front of Bart Verbruggen to nod the hosts ahead.
It was almost a two-goal cushion for Roberto De Zerbi’s side shortly after the break when Simons struck the post, leading to Porro forcing Verbruggen into a spectacular fingertip save to deny a second goal.

However, true to form in the 2025/26 season, Spurs’ lead was erased before half-time, and in spectacular fashion, as substitute Kaoru Mitoma unleashed a brilliant left-footed volley into the roof of the net after Pascal Groß’s cross found him completely unmarked at the back post.
This goal shifted the momentum of the match, but the Seagulls failed to capitalise on their pressure after the break, narrowly avoiding further trouble when Simons had his shot blocked midway through the second half. Verbruggen then had to be sharp to thwart João Palhinha’s follow-up effort.
It became increasingly clear Spurs required a flash of brilliance to secure the points, and Simons delivered precisely that by cutting in onto his stronger right foot at the edge of the area and firing a shot that thundered in off the post.

As the match reached its climax, Spurs had to show resilience, but a devastating setback came in the 95th minute when substitute Rutter found himself unmarked in the box and clinically finished to restore parity. This goal is likely to have sparked celebrations in Nottingham and East London, keeping De Zerbi’s team in the relegation zone with just five games to go.
