Ismaelo Ganiou’s dramatic late winner propelled Lens to a stunning 3-2 comeback victory over 10-man Toulouse, overcoming a 2-0 deficit. The Ligue 1 contenders inflicted a psychological setback on their rivals ahead of their Coupe de France semi-final rematch on Tuesday, marking their eighth win in the last ten encounters (D1, L1).
No team in Ligue 1 has garnered more points at home than Lens this season (W13, D2), but they faced a daunting 2-0 deficit within the first 13 minutes following a chaotic start to the match.
The opening goal for Toulouse in the sixth minute came courtesy of a blunder by goalkeeper Robin Risser, who allowed Cristian Casseres Jr’s long-range shot to slip through his grasp.
This marked only the second goal of the season for the midfielder, and just seven minutes later, another unexpected scorer extended Toulouse’s lead as 18-year-old homegrown defender Seny Koumbassa capitalised on a corner to net his first senior goal.
Lens received a crucial reprieve shortly after, as Toulouse’s leading scorer Yann Gboho was dismissed for a reckless challenge following a VAR review by referee Jeremie Pignard.

With the advantage of an extra man, Lens seized the initiative, with Wesley Said narrowly missing with a header that hit the side netting, followed by Gillaume Restes making an impressive double save against Matthieu Udol.
Florian Sotoca came close to reducing the deficit on the half-hour mark, but his header was ruled out due to a foul on the keeper according to Pignard. Despite Lens’ increased pressure, Toulouse held on to their lead at half-time for just the second time in their last eleven Ligue 1 outings (HT: D4, L5).
The siege continued after the break, as Said wasted a clear chance by heading over six minutes into the half, before his next effort failed to test Restes adequately.
Lens finally breached Toulouse’s defence in the 61st minute when substitute Allan Saint-Maximin delivered a pinpoint cross to the far post, enabling Saud Abdulhamid to score with a header for his second goal of the season.
Only six minutes later, Lens drew level as Restes misjudged a low shot from Malang Sarr, allowing Adrien Thomasson—who was instrumental in their earlier 3-0 win against Toulouse—to score his third goal of the season.
As Lens endlessly probed for the winning goal, it seemed they would have to settle for a draw until Ganiou, amidst a frenzy of 42 total shots, headed in the winner from a corner during stoppage time.
With this win, Lens now sits just one point behind Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain, although the champions have two games in hand. Their pursuit of a first top-flight title since the 1997/98 season remains on track.
In the immediate future, this result is likely to give Lens a psychological edge as they prepare to face Toulouse again on Tuesday, with the visitors struggling with just two wins since the start of February (D2, L7).
