The title race heats up as Manchester City takes on league leaders Arsenal in a crucial clash at the top of the Premier League this Sunday.
Struggling Chelsea are in urgent need of a victory against Manchester United as they vie for a top-four finish, while Liverpool seek to regain their confidence during the Merseyside derby.
AFP Sport examines three key storylines ahead of this weekend’s fixtures:
Arsenal in need of resurgence during critical clash
Declan Rice is unfazed by the criticism surrounding Arsenal’s recent drop in form, but he acknowledges the urgency for improvement to secure victory in their “title-defining” matchup against Manchester City.
Mikel Arteta’s team heads to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday with a six-point cushion over second-placed City as they aim for their first English title since 2004.
However, Arsenal’s momentum has been stifled recently, suffering a defeat in the EFL Cup final against City, a surprising FA Cup quarter-final exit to second-tier Southampton, and a disheartening defeat against Bournemouth in the Premier League.
Arsenal’s passage to the Champions League semi-finals is also tempered by the fact they only managed a nervy goalless draw against Sporting, which sealed a 1-0 aggregate win on Wednesday.
In their past five matches, the Gunners have clinched just one victory, whilst City, on the other hand, has hit a rich vein of form, taking down Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea in their last three encounters.
“There’s no denying it. We need to elevate our performance beyond what we showed against Bournemouth and possibly Sporting,” Rice stated.
“We’ve made too many mistakes lately. The Etihad is the ultimate challenge, but that’s why we’re in this sport. So, let’s do it.”
“It’s exhilarating. I can’t wait. As a kid, you watch the Premier League and see these major clashes, these title-defining episodes, and it all comes down to your readiness and your desire to win the match.”
Chelsea in crucial clash with Manchester United
Having managed just one win in their last seven league outings, Chelsea finds themselves precariously close to being cut adrift from the Champions League race.
Situated in sixth place, manager Liam Rosenior’s side has no room for error as they face third-placed Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
Currently seven points behind United, who suffered a defeat to Leeds in their most recent match, Chelsea trails fourth-placed Liverpool by four points with only six matches left to play.
Should Chelsea falter against United, their Champions League aspirations would suffer a significant blow, increasing the scrutiny on Rosenior after the fans voiced their discontent following last weekend’s 3-0 defeat to City.
Blues midfielder Andrey Santos expressed the squad’s commitment to a turnaround.
“We recognise that the fans are feeling let down,” he remarked. “We’re feeling the same way. When you mention Chelsea, winning games is expected, which isn’t happening at the moment.”
“It’s a tough period, but we need to put in the effort and push forward. We firmly believe we can finish in a Champions League position.”
Liverpool seeks recovery against Everton
Having been unceremoniously eliminated from the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain earlier this week, Liverpool aims to redeem themselves in their first match at Everton’s new Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday.
After a 4-0 aggregate defeat to PSG, manager Arne Slot faces mounting pressure.
Slot was dealt another setback this week with the news that striker Hugo Ekitike will miss the remainder of the season due to an Achilles injury.
Nevertheless, midfielder Ryan Gravenberch understands that a win against Everton during the first Merseyside derby at their state-of-the-art facility would uplift Liverpool’s disheartened supporters and bolster their Champions League qualification bid.
“We need to bounce back as Sunday approaches,” he commented.
“Our goal is to secure a spot in the Champions League next year. We must give everything we have.”
