Lionel Messi has officially purchased the Catalan club Cornella, becoming the new owner, as announced by the Spanish fifth-tier team on Thursday.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or recipient is currently active in the United States, playing for Inter Miami, and is anticipated to play a significant role for Argentina as they defend their World Cup title this year.
“This acquisition underscores Messi’s enduring connection to Barcelona and his dedication to nurturing sports and local talent in Catalonia,” the club stated in an announcement regarding the former Barcelona star’s ownership.
Cornella has been a stepping stone for several prominent players, including Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya and Messi’s former teammate at Barcelona, Jordi Alba.
However, the club has faced challenges, experiencing consecutive relegations over the past two seasons.
“Leo Messi’s presence heralds the start of a new era for the club, focusing on both athletic and organisational enhancement, fortifying its foundation, and continuing to invest in emerging talent,” Cornella further explained.
“The initiative is driven by a long-term vision and a strategic plan that blends ambition, sustainability, and a deep-rooted connection to the local community.”
