Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has returned to full training and is ready for selection ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash at home against Manchester United. This comes after he was dropped for disciplinary reasons, as confirmed by manager Liam Rosenior on Thursday.
The 25-year-old Argentina World Cup champion was left out of the squad for the emphatic 7-0 victory against League One side Port Vale in the FA Cup quarter-finals, as well as last week’s 3-0 Premier League defeat to second-placed Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.
Fernandez, who had been captaining the team in the absence of the injured Reece James, previously mentioned he would reassess his future after the World Cup and shared his desire to live in Madrid—comments for which he later issued an apology.
“Enzo has rejoined the group and has been training exceptionally well,” Rosenior told the media on Thursday. “So, it’s business as usual regarding selection for the upcoming match.”
“In terms of his training and dedication, Enzo has been outstanding as well.”
Rosenior also updated on defender Trevoh Chalobah, who has been absent since Chelsea’s Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain, as well as on James, who has been out since the defeat to Newcastle United earlier in March.
“Trevoh trained today but not quite at full capacity; it was a modified session,” Rosenior explained. “We’ll decide on his availability soon, but he’s very close. Reece is a little further away.”
Chelsea currently sits sixth in the standings on 48 points, trailing Liverpool by four points in the race for Champions League qualification, having managed to win only one of their last five league matches. A victory over third-placed United would be crucial in closing the gap in the pursuit of a top-five finish.
“Our focus should be on what we can control—our performance,” Rosenior said. “Ensuring the right attitude, energy, and application for the game is essential. I anticipate a strong performance on Saturday.”
