Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has resumed full training and is now eligible for selection for the upcoming Premier League home fixture against Manchester United this Saturday, following a disciplinary suspension, manager Liam Rosenior confirmed on Thursday.
The 25-year-old Argentina international, who was part of the World Cup-winning squad, was left out of the line-up for the recent 7-0 FA Cup quarter-final triumph over League One side Port Vale and the previous week’s 3-0 Premier League defeat to second-placed Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.
Fernandez, who had been captain in the absence of the injured Reece James, had indicated that he would reconsider his future post-World Cup and had shown interest in moving to Madrid, for which he later issued an apology.
“Enzo has been training with the group and his performance has been very, very good,” Rosenior told the media on Thursday. “So it’s back to normal for selection ahead of the game.”
“In terms of his training and commitment, Enzo has been outstanding as well.”
Rosenior also provided updates on defender Trevoh Chalobah, who hasn’t featured since the second leg of Chelsea’s Champions League exit against Paris Saint-Germain, along with an update on James, who has been out since the defeat to Newcastle United earlier in March.
“Trevoh trained today but not at full capacity; it was a modified session,” Rosenior noted. “We’ll decide on his availability soon, but he’s very close. Reece, however, is a bit further behind.”
Chelsea currently sits sixth on the table with 48 points, four points adrift of Liverpool, who occupy the Champions League spots, having secured only one victory in their last five Premier League matches. A win against third-placed United would significantly aid their quest for a top-five finish.
“We focus on what we can control, which is our performance,” Rosenior stated. “We need to ensure that our attitude, energy, and commitment to the game are all spot on. I’m anticipating a strong performance on Saturday.”
