The aftermath of Nottingham Forest’s 1-1 draw against Aston Villa at the City Ground on Sunday brought a mix of pride and frustration. While the result edged the home side closer to safety, it left the visitors yearning for the win necessary for their Champions League aspirations.
Aston Villa will undoubtedly be left feeling hard done by, having initially taken the lead through an own goal from Forest defender Murillo. They squandered multiple chances in the second half that could have handed them all three points, particularly after Neco Williams levelled the match for the hosts.
Had Villa shown more clinical finishing, they could have comfortably secured the win. However, for Forest’s coach, Vitor Pereira, the draw represents another positive step in their fight against relegation, as they now sit three points above the relegation zone.
“It was a valuable point in a challenging match against a very tough opponent,” Pereira stated to Sky Sports. “Ultimately, one point is a good result.”
“Villa is not an easy team to contain. They create issues, and we endeavoured to address those while also crafting our own chances. While three points would have been preferable to one, we are facing a strong side, and with this, we’re now five matches unbeaten across all competitions.”
Additionally, Pereira welcomed striker Chris Wood back into the squad after an injury layoff, marking his first Premier League appearance since October.
“His experience, talent, and goal-scoring instincts are invaluable. He has a knack for finding opportunities in the box. Given his physical and mental condition, he can significantly aid us,” Pereira remarked.
Aston Villa’s goalkeeper Marco Bizot only learned he would be playing shortly before kick-off after regular starter Emi Martinez was ruled out during warm-up. He expressed disappointment at not returning home with a win.
“I had no idea what went down; I saw Emi go in, and then the goalkeeper coach came to me, telling me to get ready about 25 minutes before the game started,” Bizot explained.
“We came with the intention of winning, and we did everything in our power to secure that, but sadly, we ended up with just one point. It’s simply not sufficient.
“We tried to push forward despite facing difficulties. They had moments of their own. We played well until the (Villa) goal, but then our energy dipped, allowing them to rally and equalise.
“We had chances to secure a second goal, but it’s imperative that the ball finds the back of the net. We should have claimed all three points.”
