Kaizer Chiefs secured their fourth consecutive Betway Premiership win with a 2-0 triumph against struggling TS Galaxy at FNB Stadium on Sunday.
This result places Chiefs firmly in the driver’s seat for a potential third-place finish, crucial for qualification to the CAF Confederation Cup in the upcoming season. Meanwhile, TS Galaxy faces another setback as their poor run continues.
Although they have made it to the Nedbank Cup final, their performance in the league has been dismal.
Flavio Breaks the Drought
Flavio Silva broke his scoring drought for Chiefs, having last found the net back in February. Earlier in the game, he squandered a golden opportunity to score when he intercepted a backpass but delayed his shot, allowing the defence to regroup.
However, he redeemed himself with a well-timed header in the 35th minute from Mdu Shabalala’s delicate cross. Silva placed the ball perfectly into the net’s corner, leaving Galaxy keeper Ira Tape with no chance.
This goal marks his sixth of the season, making him the leading scorer for the Chiefs, with Shabalala contributing his third assist.

Floodlight Failure
The match encountered a halt in the 64th minute when FNB Stadium’s floodlights failed to activate as daylight faded. Despite the visibility not appearing overly poor, referee Moreki Lekwape chose to suspend the game, resulting in a 30-minute delay.
This break disrupted Chiefs’ rhythm, as they were dictating the pace of play and pushing for a second goal. Unfortunately, as the rain poured down during the break, conditions became even trickier for the players upon the resumption.
Lilepo Seals the Win
Chiefs notched up their second goal with 15 minutes left as Sibongiseni Mthethwa sent Glody Lilepo on a clear run at goal. Displaying remarkable strength, Lilepo overcame a defender, and after sprinting toward the Galaxy area with the ball ahead of him, he outpaced the rushing goalkeeper, Ira Tape, to slot the ball into the net.
This marked the winger’s fourth league goal of the season.

End of the Season Schedule
This encounter was the penultimate home game for the Chiefs this season; they will only return to FNB Stadium for the final match when they take on Chippa United.
Remarkably, Chiefs have their next seven fixtures away from home, a quirk of this season’s scheduling.
On the road, Chiefs have been impressive, winning five out of eight games (D2 L1), while conceding a mere two goals. Their only loss occurred against Richards Bay back in early March.
Currently, only Orlando Pirates (2.25 points per game) have a higher away points average than Chiefs (2.13).

The Current Situation
With this win, Chiefs solidify their pursuit of third place, while Galaxy will need to be cautious, though they might believe they’ve done enough to avoid relegation.
Chiefs are now three points clear of AmaZulu in third, with two games in hand, putting them in a prime position for CAF Confederation Cup qualification next year.
In contrast, Galaxy has suffered eight defeats in their last nine league outings (with one draw), and they need to turn things around to ensure their safety. This run includes a heavy 6-0 loss to Pirates, the worst defeat in the club’s history.
Next, Chiefs will face off against bottom-placed Magesi FC on Wednesday in their only midweek match, while Galaxy will host Richards Bay next Sunday.
