AS Monaco has strengthened their bid for a place in the UEFA Champions League with a crucial 2-1 victory over rivals Olympique de Marseille, marking an impressive seventh consecutive win in Ligue 1.
In a rather slow start, even with Usain Bolt making an appearance just before the match commenced, Maghnes Akliouche nearly broke the deadlock with a spectacular attempt.
Lukas Hradecky made an important save to deny an ambitious Hamed Traorè from a tight angle, while Gerónimo Rulli was forced into action to thwart Akliouche as he tried to convert Thilo Kehrer’s long ball into the opening goal.
Hradecky continued to shine, saving a one-on-one against Igor Paixao, ensuring that the teams went into half-time level. This allowed Monaco to regroup and come out as a much-improved side in the second half.

Monaco began to exert pressure on the Marseille goal, and they were rewarded just before the hour mark when Jordan Teze delivered a fine ball into the box, allowing Aleksandr Golovin to rise above the defence and volley into the top corner.
In response, Marseille, led by skipper Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, sought an equaliser, but Hradecky was once again up to the task, parrying a powerful effort away.
Continuing with their counter-attacking strategy, Monaco managed to protect their lead, relying on Hradecky yet again as he saved a long-range effort from Quinten Timber. That approach paid off when a lapse in concentration from the Marseille defence led to a stunning moment.
Benjamin Pavard inadvertently directed his clearance into the path of Folarin Balogun, who expertly lobbed the ball over Rulli from a tight angle, securing his place in the record books as the first Monaco player to score in six consecutive league matches since 2019.
Marseille did manage to pull one back in the dying minutes when Amine Gouiri battled through the challenges in the area and fired a shot beneath Hradecky, but it wasn’t enough to stop Marseille from suffering consecutive league defeats for the first time this season.
In contrast, Monaco’s seventh straight victory sees them level on 49 points with their opponents tonight, just one point shy of Lille, who occupy the third spot that guarantees automatic qualification for the UEFA Champions League.
