As two eager clubs kicked off their new Allsvenskan seasons under the guidance of fresh Spanish managers, it was AIK that celebrated with a thrilling victory, courtesy of a young talent’s late strike against Halmstad. Meanwhile, Malmo endured a challenging match, settling for a draw against Orgryte, while the two newly-promoted teams faced off in Kalmar.
AIK 2-1 Halmstad
The Solna outfit experienced a significant decline towards the end of last season, ultimately missing out on European football. However, under the leadership of new coach Jose Riveiro, AIK has commenced this season with a win.
Midway through the first half, a free-kick delivered into the box saw Zadok Yohanna’s header crash off the post. Ibrahim Cisse was quickest to react to the rebound, converting the chance to put his side ahead.
With the score at 1-0, Halmstad—forecasted by many to have a rough season—equalised in the 64th minute. A ball into the area was nodded down by Malte Persson to Osto Liimatta, who struck the ball into the net, aided by a significant deflection.
Yet, it was seven minutes from time that Riveiro’s squad found their desired start as Yohanna cut inside from the right, battled past a couple of defenders, and fired a shot from a sharp angle to secure the victory.
Following a successful run in the Svenska Cupen last month, this was a dream first Allsvenskan goal for the 18-year-old.
Orgryte 1-1 Malmo
After a dismal 2025, Malmo displayed little improvement in their opening match under their new coach Miguel Angel Ramirez, needing to recover from behind against newly-promoted Orgryte, who were playing their first top-flight match since 2009.
The match was interrupted twice due to clashes between fans and police at Gamla Ullevi, but the scenes soon turned celebratory for the home team six minutes into the second half, when a long throw into the box was not cleared by the MFF defence, allowing Anton Andreasson to pounce at the near post.
However, the record champions salvaged a draw in the 73rd minute, thanks in part to Orgryte goalkeeper Hampus Gustafsson, who let Noah Astrand John’s shot slip through his grasp, allowing Erik Botheim to tap in the equaliser.
Kalmar 0-1 Vasteras
The top two teams from last year’s Superettan were likely not enthusiastic about facing each other again on their Allsvenskan debut; however, champions Vasteras were the happier side after managing a narrow away victory.
The lone goal came in the 11th minute, as the visitors launched an attack down the left, and Marcus Baggeson’s low cross was accidentally redirected into his own net by Achraf Dari, with Zakarias Ravik failing to clear it off the line, marking it as an own goal.
Kalmar controlled much of the match, registering more possession and 16 shots compared to Vasteras’ four, but with just three efforts on target and no key chances created, they will need to sharpen their finishing if they wish to avoid relegation this season.
Vasteras had Jonathan Ring sent off for a second booking, but the dismissal occurred deep into stoppage time, leaving Kalmar with insufficient time to capitalise on the extra man.
