New Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi has confirmed his commitment to the club for the next season, regardless of whether they face relegation from the Premier League, as he embraces the biggest challenge of his career.
The Italian was appointed on a five-year contract on Tuesday, with Spurs precariously sitting just a single point above the relegation zone.
De Zerbi has a mere seven matches to attempt to salvage Tottenham, who have not faced the threat of dropping out of the top division since 1978.
Initial reports indicated that the former Brighton and Marseille manager was hesitant to take the Spurs role before the end of the season, but was persuaded by an attractive five-year contract that makes him one of the most highly compensated coaches in the Premier League.
He also quashed any speculation regarding a clause in his contract that would permit him to depart should Spurs be relegated.
“I signed a five-year contract because, for me, it represents a significant challenge,” De Zerbi stated in an interview with the club’s official media outlet.
“I will be Tottenham’s coach next season, regardless of the outcome.”
“Tottenham, especially at this moment, is perhaps the biggest challenge of my career. I am ready to tackle this challenge.”
De Zerbi built a solid reputation in England during his two-year tenure at Brighton from 2022 to 2024.
His stint at Marseille began positively, with the team finishing second to Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1 last season, thus qualifying for the Champions League.
However, he resigned from the French club in February after failing to progress beyond the league stage of the Champions League and following a devastating 5-0 loss to PSG.
His appointment has met with mixed reactions from the Tottenham fanbase.
Some supporter groups have expressed discontent over his previous support for Mason Greenwood during his time at Marseille.
The former England international was suspended by Manchester United in January 2022 after allegations of attempted rape and sexual assault emerged.
Charges against Greenwood were dismissed by prosecutors in February 2023, and he consistently denied the allegations; he joined Marseille shortly after De Zerbi’s arrival in July 2024.
“I have never intended to diminish the seriousness of violence against women or anyone, for that matter,” De Zerbi commented, addressing the issue in his native Italian.
“Those who truly know me understand that I am not the kind of person who compromises principles for the sake of winning an additional match or title.”
“I apologise if I have caused offence regarding this matter. I have a daughter and am quite sensitive to such issues. I hope that, with time, people will come to know me better and realise I did not mean to take a firm stance.”
