The president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has established clear expectations for the successor of Otto Addo, insisting on a coach with a history of trophy success and experience at the top tier.
Kurt Okraku, the president of the Ghana Football Association, has promptly detailed the ideal characteristics of the individual the country is looking to appoint as Otto Addo’s replacement, following his recent dismissal.
With slightly over two months remaining before the commencement of Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, Okraku has emphasised the need for a pivotal appointment.
The GFA president is adamant that the new coach must be someone who commands immediate respect and possesses a winning history, capable of rejuvenating a squad that has been in disarray.
Addo’s termination occurred in the early hours of Tuesday after an urgent meeting in Stuttgart with GFA officials and Sports Minister Kofi Adams, who had arrived from Ghana to witness Monday’s 2-1 loss against Germany.
This decision marked the end of Addo’s second tenure, which produced only eight victories in 22 matches, resulting in a win percentage of 36.4%.
Essential qualities for the next coach
Okraku was straightforward and precise in outlining the attributes required for the next appointee. In an interview with 3Sports, he stated that the Executive Committee is prepared to take decisive action and knows precisely what they are searching for.
“We hope this next appointment will instil confidence in everyone involved. The ideal candidate would have a proven track record in club management and ideally at the national team level, be someone with experience in winning trophies, and ultimately someone who will inspire confidence within the squad,” he articulated.
His focus on trophies and a solid track record highlights a shift from some of the previous selections made during Okraku’s leadership.
“Players need to look to their coach and think, ‘this person has achieved success before and is knowledgeable,'” he added.
Breaking the cycle
The pressure on Okraku to make the right appointment is immense. Since assuming the GFA presidency, he has overseen four head coaches: CK Akonnor, Milovan Rajevac, Chris Hughton, and Otto Addo, all of whom have failed to leave a positive legacy.
Significantly, none of these four managed to achieve a win rate exceeding 40% during their tenures, a concerning statistic that has led to increasing dissatisfaction among stakeholders.
Each appointment came with its own justification and promises, yet all resulted in disappointment. Okraku insists that the next hire must break this pattern, indicating a willingness to expand the search and set higher goals.
Two weeks to make a decision
Despite the urgent timeline, Okraku was eager to highlight the substantial interest generated by the position, which reflects Ghana’s strong appeal as a footballing nation.
“The sooner we can have a new coach in place, the better for everyone, as they will require time to familiarise themselves with the players and start forming relationships,” Okraku remarked.
“I believe we should have the new man on board within a week or two, which will ensure we are prepared for the next training camp.”
He emphasised the scope of the opportunity, revealing that they have received approximately 800 applications.
“This is Ghana; it’s our national team that has qualified for consecutive World Cups. There are countless coaches within the sport, but only a few have the chance to coach at the World Cup level. Consequently, we’ve received around 600 to 800 applications as many aspire to be part of this,” he stated.
Potential candidates include assistant coach Desmond Ofei and former Black Stars head coach Kwesi Appiah, along with Herve Renard, Joachim Low, and Walid Regragui.
The incoming coach will have limited time to establish themselves before the 26-man World Cup squad is announced in late May, with upcoming friendlies against Mexico and Wales scheduled as preparation.
Ghana has been drawn into Group L for the 2026 World Cup, facing England, Panama, and Croatia.
