LAS VEGAS: Joseph Tapine has committed to leading through his actions rather than words following his impressive debut as captain during Canberra’s victory over the Warriors.
In a remarkable 30-8 upset against the Wahs, Tapine proved to be the most impactful forward on the pitch, racking up more metres than any other middle player.
For the tall Kiwi, it was an ideal beginning to his captaincy, having been appointed by Ricky Stuart over the summer after the departure of Englishman Elliott Whitehead.
“It was a significant match for the team being in Vegas, and I suppose it was also a big occasion for me – my first as captain,” Tapine shared with Wide World of Sports.
“I’m not someone who talks a lot – I could probably say more out there, but I prefer to lead by example.”

“I was pleased with my performance – the Warriors have a formidable forward pack, and we knew they would try to dominate us physically. We held our ground well and secured a solid win. Playing here is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so winning made it even more special.
“Having my family here made it even more memorable.”

Although a two-match suspension for a shoulder charge slightly overshadowed Tapine’s joy, it didn’t dampen his spirits significantly.
The victory was a classic surprise orchestrated by Stuart, particularly as bookies had deemed the Raiders as contenders for the wooden spoon. However, the seasoned coach remains grounded.
“I’m incredibly proud, but it’s just round one, and we need to stay grounded after such an incredible week,” the club legend remarked.
