Tottenham Hotspur achieved their first three consecutive Premier League victories since December 2023, triumphing over Ipswich Town with a scoreline of 4-1 at Portman Road, marking their first victory in this fixture in the 21st century.
Spurs were able to reintegrate Destiny Udogie and Brennan Johnson into the starting lineup as they aimed to maintain momentum. However, Ange Postecoglou’s squad appeared sluggish in the opening stages in Suffolk.
The visitors faced an early scare when Ipswich surged forward within the first 30 seconds. Liam Delap unleashed a powerful low shot that was brilliantly saved by Guglielmo Vicario, who also thwarted Jaden Philogene’s follow-up attempt.
Delap proved to be a persistent threat for the Spurs defence, outpacing Archie Gray before missing the target and then nearly scoring with a header that struck the post, all happening within the first six minutes.
After weathering the initial pressure, Tottenham made their breakthrough on 18 minutes when Archie Gray delivered a sweeping long ball to Son Heung-min on the left flank.
Son’s dazzling footwork allowed him to outmaneuver Ben Godfrey, successfully delivering a low cross to the back post, where Johnson was on hand to tap in.
The same two players linked up again to double the lead shortly before the half-hour mark, with Son afforded too much space to find Johnson in the box, who displayed remarkable composure to slot the ball past Alex Palmer.
Although Ipswich had a considerable challenge ahead to get back into the match, they managed to pull a goal back nine minutes before half-time when Omari Hutchinson netted from Jack Clarke’s cutback, marking his third league goal of the season – with all of them coming against traditional ‘big-six’ clubs.
The second half saw a natural dip in pace, resulting in fewer chances, and although Ipswich thought they had equalised through Luke Woolfenden’s header, it was disallowed for offside.
In response, Postecoglou brought on James Maddison, and the former Norwich City player played a pivotal role in turning the tide against Ipswich by setting up Djed Spence for a deflected strike that restored the visitors’ two-goal cushion.
That lead proved insurmountable, further enhanced by a late solo effort from Dejan Kulusevski, as Kieran McKenna’s side suffered their fourth consecutive home league defeat, leaving them without a win in their last seven matches across all venues.
A win for Wolves elsewhere only compounded Ipswich’s troubles, leaving them five points adrift of safety with 12 matches remaining.
