Benfica upheld their impressive unbeaten record at home in European competitions against French teams, stretching it to 19 matches with a thrilling 3-3 draw against Monaco, which saw them advance to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League with a 4-3 aggregate victory.
Facing a one-goal deficit, a motivated Monaco team posed an early challenge at Estadio da Luz, including a tense moment for Benfica when Breel Embolo’s penalty shout was dismissed by the officials.
However, Monaco’s promising start quickly faded when Wilfried Singo was penalised for a mistake just outside the penalty area.
Vangelis Pavlídis capitalised on Singo’s slip, expertly creating space to deliver the ball across to Kerem Aktürkoğlu, who netted his fourth European goal of the season, establishing a two-goal advantage for Benfica in the tie.
Monaco showed commendable resolve in their response to Benfica’s early goal. Embolo came close, with a powerful header striking the woodwork just moments before Takumi Minamino found the back of the net, narrowing the aggregate deficit.
The former Liverpool forward skillfully slotted his shot at the near post, leaving Anatoliy Trubin disappointed as he failed to make an effective save. With their spirits lifted, Monaco charged into the second half, managing to level the tie within six minutes of the restart.
Eliesse Ben Seghir, who had already tested Trubin only minutes earlier, expertly curled the ball past the Benfica goalkeeper after receiving a clever pass from Maghnes Akliouche.

The visitors, however, found themselves trailing once more when captain Thilo Kehrer was penalised for clattering into Fredrik Aursnes’ leg in the penalty area, leading referee Glenn Nyberg to consult the VAR before awarding a spot-kick.
Pavlídis, who has been Benfica’s leading scorer, confidently converted the penalty by firing to the left of an unmoving Radosław Majecki. However, the hosts’ celebration was cut short as Monaco quickly responded.
In an instant impact, super-sub George Ilenikhena unleashed a powerful shot that sailed through Trubin’s defences after overpowering Nicolás Otamendi within a minute of his introduction.
In a match full of twists and turns, Benfica surged back up the pitch, regaining the lead as Orkun Kokcu prodded the ball home from a precise delivery by Álvaro Carreras, igniting wild celebrations among the home fans as they restored their aggregate advantage.
Though the home side had a late penalty denied by VAR, it proved inconsequential as they held on through the tense final minutes to secure a place in the last 16 against either Barcelona or Liverpool.
