Arne Slot, aged 46, praised Liverpool’s resilience as the “exhausted” Premier League leaders clinched a gritty 2-1 victory over Wolves on Sunday.
Thanks to an early goal from Luis Diaz and a penalty scored by Mohamed Salah before half-time at Anfield, Slot’s team now holds a seven-point lead over second-placed Arsenal.
However, Liverpool’s strong start did little to ease their challenge as Wolves, currently positioned fourth from the bottom, responded admirably.
Matheus Cunha’s strike put Wolves back in contention, forcing Liverpool to dig deep to secure their first win in three matches across all competitions.
Slot acknowledged the pivotal role of goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who made several critical saves, stating: “This victory is significant. We had to battle, and we relied on Alisson.
“Wolves were very adventurous. In a season where goals are essential, victories like this are necessary too.
“Our tactics aren’t about not creating chances at all. Wolves improved as we struggled.
“We had to display a different mentality, and we managed to get over the line. If that’s what it takes to win, I’m pleased the players could deliver once more.”
Slot acknowledged that Liverpool occasionally looked depleted, especially after Wednesday’s intense 2-2 draw with Everton, which featured a last-gasp equaliser from the Toffees, followed by the team’s disappointing FA Cup exit to Plymouth last weekend.
“There’s fatigue from both physical exertion and mental strain. We faced a mental test today. We thought a third goal was scored, only to then receive a penalty for it, which were both correct calls from the referee,” he noted.
“Perhaps that did contribute to our fatigue. For the first time this season, I noticed my players were more fatigued than usual.
“To achieve your goals, it’s not just about passing the ball out from the back or Mo scoring; it also involves solid defending.”
‘There’s no room to relax’
Liverpool’s determination to secure a fourth win in five league matches helped maintain their lead over Arsenal in the title chase.
With aspirations for a record-equalling 20th English title and their first since 2020, Liverpool has 13 matches remaining to clinch the trophy.
They will face crucial encounters against Aston Villa, Manchester City, and Newcastle in their next three league outings.
Slot is acutely aware that Arsenal, who have been runners-up for the last two seasons, will stop at nothing to keep the contest alive.
“Historically, it’s often been a duel between two teams towards the end of the season. At the moment, it seems to be a battle primarily between us and Arsenal,” he remarked.
“In this competition, there’s never a moment to relax. I’ve observed Arsenal’s impressive 15-game unbeaten streak, and the gap hasn’t changed significantly, demonstrating the competitiveness we face.
“If you aim for something special, you must win numerous matches in this league.”
Despite being charged with abusive conduct towards match officials after being sent off during the tumultuous Merseyside derby, Slot was able to take his place on the bench for the match against Wolves.
The Dutch coach faces the prospect of a suspension and remarked: “It’s an ongoing issue; discussing it right now isn’t wise.”
“We’re aware of the referee’s comments, and now it’s time for us to present our side. Ultimately, it will be up to a panel to determine whether I will be suspended.”
