Nico Gonzalez, the latest addition to Manchester City at just 23 years of age, has disclosed that his father’s previous connection with the Premier League champions played a significant role in his decision to move from Porto to the Etihad Stadium.
The transfer was finalised on Monday’s deadline day for a fee of £49.9 million, bringing the talented midfielder to Pep Guardiola’s squad.
Fran, Gonzalez’s father, used to be a coach at City’s academy during Gonzalez’s formative years.
“He spent two years here,” Gonzalez explained on Wednesday. “That’s why he always advised me that if I got the chance, I should make the move here.”
“He always speaks highly of Manchester – the city and, of course, the team. He said I would have a wonderful time here and feel truly happy in the city. He loved living here, and I visited once and really enjoyed the place.”
“He has guided me in making the right choices and always mentioned that coming here would be the best opportunity for me.”
“For several years, he expressed his desire for me to play here. Now, he is incredibly proud and filled with joy.”
Before his stint at Porto in 2023, Gonzalez honed his skills at Barcelona’s prestigious La Masia academy, where he made 37 appearances. He later went on loan to Valencia.
With City experiencing midfield struggles due to Rodri’s injury, the former Spain Under-21 international may find himself in action sooner rather than later, and he is optimistic about his integration into the team.
“Having been raised in La Masia, I’ve always played a style similar to what Manchester City embodies,” he said.
“In Portugal, I also focused on enhancing my gameplay and the pace of matches, which has contributed to my development as a well-rounded player. I hope the fans appreciate a player who can maintain possession while also being a threat in attack.”
Gonzalez concluded his time at Porto with seven goals across 29 appearances this season and is eager to make an immediate impression with his new team, which currently sits fifth in the Premier League.
“I was having my best season yet, and farewell to those who felt like family was challenging,” said Gonzalez.
“However, moving to Manchester was a straightforward choice, as it presents me with an incredible opportunity for growth—truly the best decision I could make.”
“I’ve significantly raised my intensity, and I’m hopeful this will be an asset in the Premier League.”
