Ruben Amorim is set to have a discussion with Alejandro Garnacho following the young Manchester United star’s unexpected exit after a contentious substitution during the 3-2 victory over Ipswich on Wednesday.
The dismissal of Patrick Dorgu prompted Amorim to replace Garnacho with defender Noussair Mazraoui late in the first half at Old Trafford.
Instead of taking a seat on the bench alongside his teammates, the 20-year-old Argentine forward marched directly down the touchline to the dressing rooms.
The decision met with boos from the United supporters, and shortly afterwards, Garnacho shared an Instagram story depicting him looking forlorn as he walked through the rain.
“It was cold and wet, perhaps,” Amorim commented regarding Garnacho’s hasty retreat down the tunnel.
“The plan was to shift to a 5-3-1 formation. I recognise the risk in substituting perhaps our only player with one-on-one speed, but I believed the team was managing the game well, nearing half-time.
“When making the substitution, we had to select someone to come off, and we also had to consider set pieces. So, it was my decision.”
When asked if he was dissatisfied with Garnacho, Amorim referenced Marcus Rashford, who recently joined Aston Villa on loan after the Portuguese manager expressed frustration with his attitude.
“You’re linking this to Rashford, right? I understand, I understand,” Amorim replied.
“What I’m indicating is that I will obviously speak with Garnacho about the matter, and we can discuss it further in the next press conference if you’d like.”
While Amorim prepares for his chat with Garnacho, he refrained from critiquing Dorgu despite United surviving his early blunder and sending off.
Ipswich’s Jaden Philogene took advantage of a disastrous mix-up between Dorgu and United keeper Andre Onana to score the opening goal.
United regained the lead with an own goal from Sam Morsy and a strike from Matthijs de Ligt, but Dorgu’s foul on Omari Hutchinson resulted in a red card after referee Darren England consulted the pitchside monitor.
Ipswich equalised just before half-time when Philogene’s cross evaded Onana, but Harry Maguire’s header shortly into the second half secured Amorim’s fifth league victory with United.
“Everyone watching that ball must have been thinking, ‘Here we go again,'” the Portuguese manager reflected on Ipswich’s earlier goal.
“However, football can be unpredictable, and we managed to handle all the challenges throughout the match. I genuinely believe we earned the three points today.
“The initial situation was due to a misunderstanding between the players.
“As for the sending-off, I truly know Dorgu well. He has no intention of causing harm to anyone, and that’s important for me.”
