Montpellier has been relegated to Ligue 2 after spending 16 consecutive seasons in France’s top division, a fate confirmed by Monaco’s 1-1 draw with Le Havre on Saturday.
The outcome for Montpellier was determined prior to their match against Reims on Sunday, as they sit firmly at the bottom of Ligue 1 with only 15 points from 30 matches.
With just 12 points still up for grabs from their final four fixtures, Montpellier has lost any chance of evading relegation, trailing 13 points behind Le Havre, who are in the relegation playoff position in 16th place.
“After 16 uninterrupted seasons in the top tier, Montpellier will be competing in Ligue 2 next season. We extend our gratitude to our loyal supporters for their backing during this extremely challenging season,” the club expressed on social media.

Despite taking a crucial point from their encounter with Monaco, Le Havre remains only one point ahead of St Etienne.
Montpellier’s risky decision to appoint inexperienced coach Zoumana Camara earlier this month did not yield the turnaround needed to steer them into the relegation playoffs.
The 46-year-old, who stepped into his first managerial role after serving as an assistant to Laurent Blanc, Unai Emery, and Thomas Tuchel at Paris Saint-Germain, has lost both matches since taking over, including a dismal 5-1 defeat to Marseille last week.
