Fulham kept their hopes of European football alive in the Premier League with a solid 2-1 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers, who missed the opportunity to stretch their lead above the relegation zone to eight points.
Following a lacklustre attacking display in their recent loss to Crystal Palace, Fulham wasted no time in making an impact, scoring less than a minute into the match from an unexpected source.
Ryan Sessegnon, who was selected in the starting line-up ahead of Antonee Robinson, received a pass from Andreas Pereira on the left and deftly curled the ball into the bottom corner, marking his first goal since October 2022.
Wolves responded with determination, and after a period of sustained pressure, they managed to equalise in a deserving fashion.
Jean-Ricner Bellegarde sent in a cross from the left that was mis-kicked by Nelson Semedo, but the loose ball fell perfectly for Joao Gomes, who struck a volley past a helpless Bernd Leno.
Fulham could hardly contest the need for Wolves’ equaliser based on the flow of the game, but they rallied after conceding and sought to reclaim their lead.
Andreas Pereira sent a delicate ball to Adama Traore, but the former Wolves forward fired a volley directly at José Sá. Moments later, Rodrigo Muniz had a close-range shot blocked by Santiago Bueno.
Both sides went into the break with things level, but once again, Wolves’ lapse in concentration at the start of the second half would cost them dearly.
Marco Silva’s side took just 62 seconds to regain their lead, as Adama played through to Muniz, who executed a perfectly weighted chip over the advancing Sá.
Wolves’ lack of attacking threat in the second half prompted Vítor Pereira to change his tactics, opting to introduce Jorgen Strand Larsen in place of Bellegarde after starting without a recognised striker.
Despite maintaining control of the ball, Wolves struggled to penetrate Fulham’s defence, who remained robust and looked to counter-attack.
Former Wolves striker Raul Jimenez missed a golden opportunity to convert this strategy when he found himself one-on-one with Sá, who stood firm to keep the Mexican forward at bay, ensuring his scoring drought against his old club continued.
With Matheus Cunha tightly marked for significant portions of the match, Wolves ultimately failed to turn the tide and take anything from the game, marking a first defeat for Pereira against his fellow manager Silva.
While Fulham only rose to ninth place, they remain firmly in the mix for European qualification, extending their impressive away form to just one loss in ten matches.
