Tottenham Hotspur’s quest for Premier League (PL) survival faced a significant setback as Georginio Rutter’s 95th-minute strike salvaged a 2-2 draw for Brighton & Hove Albion, leaving Spurs without a victory in their last 15 top-flight fixtures.
The hosts, now in dire need of wins to avoid their first relegation since the 1976/77 season, needed a strong start against Brighton to energise the home crowd.
However, an uninspiring beginning where they failed to threaten in the final third didn’t help their cause. The match ignited soon after, exposing vulnerabilities in the Spurs’ defence.
A deep free-kick was kept alive at the far post by Jack Hinshelwood, whose header back across goal struck his own post, causing the Tottenham supporters to hold their breath as the ball rolled dangerously close to the line.
This moment marked a turning point for Spurs, who managed to take the lead just before half-time.
Xavi Simons conjured a clever play, chipping the ball over Brighton’s defence, allowing Pedro Porro to leap in ahead of Bart Verbruggen and nod the hosts in front.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side nearly extended their lead moments later, as just two minutes into the second half, Simons rattled the post, and Porro’s rebound was miraculously tipped away by Verbruggen, keeping the score at 1-0.
However, as has been all too familiar for Spurs in the 2025/26 season, their lead evaporated before the interval. Substitute Kaoru Mitoma executed a stunning left-footed volley from Pascal Groß’s delivery, finding the roof of the net after being left unmarked at the back post.
This goal shifted the momentum of the match, but the Seagulls couldn’t capitalise on their dominance after half-time. Instead, Spurs came close to regaining the lead when Simons had his shot blocked midway through the second half, and Verbruggen saved João Palhinha’s follow-up effort.
It was clear Spurs required a divine moment to secure any points, which Simons delivered by cutting in onto his favoured right foot just outside the box and unleashing a powerful strike that thudded off the post and into the net.
As the match approached its conclusion, Spurs fought hard to secure their lead, but in the dying seconds, they were dealt a devastating blow when substitute Rutter found space in the box and slotted home an equaliser. This outcome will surely have stirred celebrations in Nottingham and East London as it confirmed that De Zerbi’s team remains in the relegation zone with just five games left to play.
