Sunderland have decried the alleged online racial abuse aimed at striker Brian Brobbey in the aftermath of their 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
Brobbey played a pivotal role in a significant incident when Tottenham’s captain Cristian Romero collided with his own goalkeeper, Antonin Kinsky, while under pressure from the Sunderland forward.
Romero was subsequently forced to leave the field in tears, while Kinsky managed to finish the match with a heavily bandaged head.
“We are resolutely behind Brian and extend our unwavering support to him,” Sunderland expressed in a statement.
The club highlighted that this incident is part of a concerning trend, mentioning that Romaine Mundle and Lutsharel Geertruida have also faced similar abuse in recent weeks.
“The club has submitted a report regarding this incident to the Premier League, relevant social media platforms, and the police, and we anticipate prompt action against those accountable,” they stated.
Sunderland has moved up to 10th place in the league and is slated to take on fourth-placed Aston Villa this Sunday.
