Roberto De Zerbi urged Tottenham Hotspur to seize their attacking mindset as he strives to prevent the club from facing its first relegation since 1977. Speaking on Friday, he emphasised that the ‘DNA’ of Tottenham is centred around attacking football and scoring.
After being appointed as Spurs’ third manager this season, the former Brighton & Hove Albion boss has just seven matches to guide the North London team to safety, recognising the pressing nature of his mission.
Tottenham has not celebrated a Premier League victory in 2026, managing only 40 league goals this season, resulting in a negative goal difference of -10.
“I don’t have the time for principles or build-up. I aim to provide organisation both with and without the ball,” De Zerbi told reporters ahead of his debut match in charge against Sunderland on Sunday.
“What I want to achieve is to instil character. We need the right spirit and the courage to play and to attack. The essence of this club and squad is about finding the back of the net and scoring goals. This is where I can pass on my philosophy.”
The Italian manager expressed his commitment to remain at the helm next season, irrespective of outcomes, labelling the role as the toughest challenge of his career after signing a long-term deal.
Spurs’ fortunes have declined under both Thomas Frank and interim coach Igor Tudor, leaving the club languishing in 17th place—just one point clear of the relegation zone.
“I believe that to keep (Spurs) in the Premier League, it must be clear to everyone, because I want to work at this level. I think I deserve the chance to work in the Premier League,” De Zerbi stated.
“Regardless, since I signed my contract in April, I must be prepared to remain no matter what happens next season. My focus is on Sunderland and the remaining six matches, but my intentions are very clear.”
Unfortunately, he faced a setback when forward Mohammed Kudus experienced a complication in his recovery from a quadricep injury, putting the Ghanaian international’s participation in the World Cup at risk.
“I started off on a somewhat unlucky note. Kudus was a player I regarded as pivotal. However, we need to move forward. We have several quality attackers, and we must assist them in showcasing their talents,” De Zerbi added.
“(Randal) Kolo Muani may not be having a stellar season, but he is a capable player. Mathys Tel was a player I wanted back at (Olympique de) Marseille. Xavi Simons is a significant talent. You know Richarlison and (Dominic) Solanke even better than I do. We need to put them in the best possible conditions.”
