Roberto De Zerbi has urged Tottenham Hotspur to rediscover their attacking flair as he strives to prevent the club from facing its first relegation since 1977, emphasising on Friday that the club’s ‘DNA’ lies in attacking and scoring goals.
Having taken on the role of Spurs’ third manager this season, the former Brighton & Hove Albion head coach has seven matches to secure the North London team’s safety, recognising the critical nature of his assignment.
Spurs have yet to claim a Premier League victory in 2026, having netted only 40 league goals this season, which has resulted in a negative goal difference of -10.
“I don’t have time to focus on philosophy or gradual progression; my aim is to impose organisation both with and without the ball,” De Zerbi stated to reporters ahead of his first match in charge, which will take place against Sunderland on Sunday.
“What I aim to instil is the right character—the spirit and audacity to play and attack. The essence of this club and its squad is to find the net and score. In this respect, I can effectively convey my principles.”
The Italian manager has pledged to remain in charge next season, regardless of outcomes, labelling the position as the most significant challenge of his career following the signing of a long-term contract.
Spurs have seen a dramatic drop in their league position, first under Thomas Frank and then under interim manager Igor Tudor, currently languishing in 17th place—just one point above the relegation zone.
“To keep Spurs in the Premier League is clear to everyone; I want to continue working at this level. I believe I deserve to be in the Premier League,” De Zerbi expressed.
“If I signed my contract in April, I must be prepared to remain regardless of the situation next season. My primary focus is on Sunderland and the other six matches ahead. However, my intentions are quite clear.”
Unfortunately, he faced a setback when forward Mohammed Kudus experienced complications in his recovery from a quad injury, putting the Ghanaian international’s participation in the World Cup at risk.
“I may not have started with much luck, as Kudus was instrumental in my plans. Nevertheless, we must look ahead. Our squad has a wealth of talented attackers, and it is essential to help them showcase their abilities,” De Zerbi remarked.
“(Randal) Kolo Muani hasn’t had his best season, but he is a capable player. Mathys Tel was someone I wanted at (Olympique de) Marseille. Xavi Simons is an exceptional talent. Richarlison and (Dominic) Solanke are also well-known; we need to ensure they are in peak condition.”
