Benfica’s manager, Jose Mourinho, has once again asserted that Danish international Morten Hjulmand of Sporting CP receives preferential treatment from officials in the Portuguese league.
Mourinho previously lambasted the referees in December regarding their handling of Hjulmand’s situations and reiterated before the weekend that the Danish player enjoys a ‘carte blanche’ when it comes to officiating decisions.
In his characteristically sarcastic tone, ‘The Special One’ quipped, “Hjulmand has only picked up Portuguese to chat with the referees.”
“This raises an important point as we consider the next foreign players who might join Benfica. In Portugal, we typically applaud foreign players who strive to learn the language when they arrive — and I can certainly relate, having worked abroad myself.”
“However, the usual intent behind learning the language is to facilitate social integration, enhance job performance, and build rapport with teammates. But learning a language primarily to engage with referees — that’s quite remarkable.”
“If a foreign player comes to Benfica, we’ll certainly encourage them to learn the language swiftly. It’s quite an amusing circumstance,” Mourinho remarked in his trademark sarcastic style, as reported by Portuguese outlet A Bola.
Meanwhile, FC Porto is currently in command of the Portuguese Primeira Liga, boasting a notable lead over both Sporting CP and Benfica, sitting four points ahead of Sporting and seven points clear of Benfica.
