Bayern Munich’s leading marksman Harry Kane (31) is unlikely to feature in the home league clash against third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday, as he continues to recover from a calf muscle injury, according to coach Vincent Kompany on Saturday.
The England skipper, who has scored 21 goals in the league this season, sustained the injury during Tuesday’s Champions League playoff second leg against Celtic, which ended in a draw.
“This season, we’ve faced these situations before,” Kompany mentioned in a press conference. “It’s not possible to replace Harry directly, as few players can contribute 40 to 50 goals in a season.”
“We’ll aim to come up with the best plan for tomorrow to secure the victory. If he cannot play, we will manage it within the squad. We still have one training session left.”
Fortunately, Kane’s spell on the sidelines is not anticipated to exceed a few days, with Kompany expressing optimism that he will return for the following match. “The positive news is that it’s not a situation where we’re looking at three or four weeks. It’s a short-term issue,” the coach remarked.
Kane’s absence is untimely, as Bayern have drawn their past two fixtures, and they are preparing to face Bayer Leverkusen in an all-German Champions League Round of 16 tie next month.
They were held to a 0-0 stalemate by Leverkusen in the league last week, followed by a 1-1 draw against Celtic in the Champions League playoff, securing a 3-2 aggregate win on Tuesday.
The Bundesliga leaders currently hold an eight-point advantage over second-placed Leverkusen.
“Our focus is solely on the upcoming match against Frankfurt at home. We know our fans can create unforgettable moments in this stadium,” Kompany stated.
